The five denim cuts set to dominate this autumn

Jeans are taking over autumn fashion again, with utility, bootcut, slouchy and low-rise styles leading a broad return of familiar silhouettes.

Utility jeans stand out for their multiple pockets, relaxed cuts and heavier denim. Their workwear roots make comfort the central rule. Gabriela Hearst pairs them with turtleneck sweaters over loose shirts, while Givenchy combines them with zippered leather jackets. Chunky sneakers and hoodies also fit the look.

Bootcut jeans return with a close fit through the hips and thighs, then open slightly from the knee to the ankle. This season’s versions use softer fabrics, wider hems and faded details at the front. They can be worn with T-shirts, short cardigans, black shirts, leather blazers or slim heels.

Slouchy jeans bring a high waist, fuller hips and a tighter lower edge. Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber and Kim Kardashian are among the celebrities associated with the silhouette. Tom Ford suggests sheer blouses, wool jackets and thin-heeled sandals, while Erdem shows them with sleeveless tops. Slim sweaters, sneakers and suede boots offer more casual options.

Low-rise jeans, a defining look of the 2000s linked to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, are also back. Gucci, McQueen and American Eagle are among the brands bringing them into current collections. The styling emphasizes a small glimpse of the midriff, with tank tops, oversized sweatshirts, cropped jackets, heels, ankle boots or sandals.
