Morena concludes candidate registration amid shadow of Sinaloa governor's probe

Mexico's ruling party, Morena, has concluded the registration period for its aspirants vying for leadership positions in state-level defense committees for the upcoming 2027 election cycle. The process, however, was notably overshadowed by ongoing investigations into the former governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya.

Morena is much more than a political force, it is much more than a party and a government, it is a national transformation movement and the citizens of Sinaloa are a full, politically informed citizenry that values all variables to make decisions in the sense of the vote.

Citlalli Hernández, president of Morena's National Electoral Commission, reported that a total of 277 aspirants registered, with 123 participating in person and 154 online. Guerrero registered the highest number of candidates, while Colima had the fewest. Morena expects to announce six state-level candidates per state by July, who will then undergo open public surveys.

Despite the party's efforts to move forward, the "ghost" of Rubén Rocha Moya loomed large on the final day of registration. Aspirants seeking to represent Sinaloa were consistently questioned about their connection to the former governor, who faces investigations. Senator Imelda Castro asserted that Morena is a broad movement, not solely defined by its state government in Sinaloa, and expressed confidence in the party's standing against the opposition in upcoming surveys.

Other aspirants addressed the controversy directly. Jesús Fernando García Hernández, a federal deputy on leave, stated that the governor's situation is a personal matter to be resolved with justice. María Teresa Guerra Ochoa, who served as Secretary of Women under Rocha Moya, acknowledged her past association but emphasized her commitment to her political path. The party faces the challenge of navigating these controversies while preparing for the significant electoral contests ahead.
