Morena says Tlatelolco assembly will not be electoral

Morena says its planned gathering at Mexico City’s Plaza de las Tres Culturas will not be an electoral rally or a launch event for candidates. Lawmaker Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar described it as the culmination of meetings held across the capital and other parts of Mexico in defense of national sovereignty.

The assembly will bring together Morena’s national leadership and the party’s new Mexico City president. Ramírez Cuéllar said the historic plaza was chosen for its symbolic character, while the speeches will reinforce the party’s sovereignty message for its members.

It is an assembly that is the culmination of a series of assemblies across the city and throughout the country in defense of national sovereignty.

He said Morena was not currently in an electoral process and that the electoral calendar did not allow the event to be treated as a campaign activity. The party’s leaders and lawmakers, he added, were already carrying out the work in communities and territories, with the assembly intended to strengthen that message among the membership.

Ramírez Cuéllar also said Morena had not yet issued a specific call for the renewal of municipal governments and Mexico City boroughs. As a result, no decision has been made on possible leave requests by lawmakers seeking to register as coordinators.

The party has decided that current lawmakers will not be required to step down from their seats to register as coordinators. Any further decision, he said, will wait for the specific call covering municipal presidents and Mexico City boroughs.
