Morena to vet 'undesirable' members but rely on surveys for candidates

Mexico's ruling party, Morena, will maintain vigilance to prevent "undesirable" individuals from joining its ranks, according to party president Ariadna Montiel. While the party will not issue blanket pre-emptive bans on potential members, it will implement careful screening processes.

Montiel stressed that accusations against any Morena member must be proven, and individuals should be judged by their actions. She highlighted that surveys will serve as the primary mechanism for selecting candidates, ensuring that those who emerge are the best evaluated and reflect public sentiment. This approach aligns with the party's aim to represent national diversity and plurality, a strategy that contributed to their presidential victory in 2018.

Furthermore, Montiel dismissed a purported list circulating on social media that outlined gender requirements for candidates in the 17 gubernatorial races in 2027. She stated that any necessary adjustments to comply with gender parity rules would be analyzed after all survey results are in. She also criticized the opposition National Action Party (PAN), characterizing their proposals as a regression to past policies rooted in neoliberalism and confrontation, lacking new ideas and rejecting social programs.

Montiel asserted that any announcements not publicly made by Morena are false. She specifically addressed the PAN's slogan "Patria, family and freedom," accusing the party of promoting foreign interference and recalling that previous PAN administrations left millions of Mexicans in poverty. Morena, she stated, aims for transformation and will remain open to those with that conviction, while rigorously using surveys as its core selection tool.
