Morgan Freeman to play Robert Langdon in new Netflix series

Morgan Freeman is set to embody the iconic symbologist Robert Langdon in a new Netflix series, taking over the role previously played by Tom Hanks in "The Da Vinci Code" and its sequels. Freeman, known for his roles in "The Gilded Age" and "The Plot Against America," will portray the Harvard professor and symbologist in an adaptation based on Dan Brown's "The Secret of the Ages."

The crime series is a joint venture between Brown and Carlton Cuse, who also serves as showrunner and screenwriter. Cuse, recognized for his work on "Lost" and "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan," expressed his enthusiasm for Freeman's casting. The narrative follows Langdon in a race against time and ancient forces as he attempts to rescue a missing scientist and locate her groundbreaking manuscript. The manuscript's contents could permanently alter humanity's understanding of the human mind. The adaptation blends futuristic science with mystical lore, delivering the suspense, global intrigue, and historical puzzles that have made Brown's Langdon novels a worldwide phenomenon.

"The Secret of the Ages," published in 2025, is the sixth book in Brown's Robert Langdon series, which began with "Angels & Demons" in 2000. Brown's books have sold over 250 million copies in 56 languages, and the film franchise grossed approximately $2.24 billion globally. Cuse noted that the eight-hour series format allows for a fuller exploration of Brown's work compared to the constraints of a two-hour film.
