Moroccan Dams Show Strong Recovery, Fill Rates Double National Average

Moroccan dams are demonstrating remarkable resilience in their water reserves, with national fill rates reaching 68.79% by mid-August 2026. This figure represents a significant improvement, more than doubling the 34.72% recorded at the same time last year, despite minor decreases attributed to successive heatwaves. The total water volume stored across the country now stands at 11.71 billion cubic meters against a normal capacity of 17.03 billion cubic meters.

The Tansift basin leads the nation with an 83.78% fill rate, followed closely by Sebou (81.92%), Loukkos (81.72%), and Bouregreg (81.06%). A notable recovery is seen in the Oum Er-Rbia basin, where the Al Massira dam, the kingdom's second-largest reservoir and a vital source for drinking water in the Casablanca-Settat region and irrigation in the Doukkala plains, has seen its fill rate surge from 3.38% in 2025 to 40.70% this year. Its storage has increased from approximately 90 million to over 1 billion cubic meters.

However, some basins continue to experience water stress. Draa-Oued Noun (32.82%) and Souss-Massa (49.62%) remain below the national average. The Ziz-Ghris basin is the sole exception, showing a year-on-year decline from 48.63% to 41.39%. While most basins reflect a positive water season after years of stress, regional disparities persist, particularly in southern and eastern areas that received less rainfall. Daily fluctuations in water levels are observed due to water discharge for consumption and irrigation, but the overall trend for the nation's water reserves this summer remains positive.
