Record Heat and Thunderstorms Grip Morocco

Morocco is bracing for a dual weather assault as the General Directorate of Meteorology issued a new warning detailing the simultaneous occurrence of severe thunderstorms and a significant heatwave across the kingdom. The alert highlights the convergence of two powerful weather phenomena, creating challenging conditions for many regions.

The meteorological office has placed several provinces under an orange alert for thunderstorms, accompanied by hail and strong winds. These storms are expected to bring rainfall ranging from 20 to 30 millimeters. The affected areas include Al Haouz, Azilal, Khémisset, Kalaat Sraghna, Khouribga, Fqih Ben Salah, Meknes, El Hajeb, Ouarzazate, and Taroudant. This warning is in effect from Friday afternoon until Friday evening.

Adding to the volatile weather, a severe heatwave is forecast to persist, with temperatures expected to reach up to 48 degrees Celsius in some areas. This is particularly concerning as it coincides with the peak of the "Samaim" season, a period known for extreme summer heat in Morocco. Regions like Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Smara, and Tata are predicted to experience temperatures between 45 and 48 degrees Celsius from Friday through Saturday, also under an orange alert.

Other provinces in the central and northern parts of the kingdom, including Taounate, Sidi Kacem, and Ouazzane, will also experience high temperatures. Coastal areas like Laayoune, Tan-Tan, and Guelmim are forecast to see temperatures between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius. These extreme conditions follow similar weather patterns observed on Thursday and Friday.
