Moroccan football legend Houssine Kharja praises federation president, defends FIFA chief

Former Moroccan international footballer Houssine Kharja has publicly endorsed Fouzi Lekjaa, the current president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). Kharja described Lekjaa as the "best president" the federation has ever seen, expressing deep respect and admiration for his leadership. He emphasized Lekjaa's "wonderful work" across various national teams and women's football, characterizing him as a passionate individual fully invested in his mission.

Kharja's comments came in response to speculation about him potentially succeeding Lekjaa. Instead, he firmly stated his wish for Lekjaa to continue leading the federation. He also lauded the Moroccan national team's performance at the recent World Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals. Kharja considered this achievement a "real source of pride" and commended coach Mohamed Wahbi for maintaining the momentum established by Walid Regragui in the 2022 World Cup.

Beyond domestic football, Kharja strongly defended FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid controversy surrounding the "FFE" project. He argued that accusations against Infantino are unfair and that FIFA's proposals remain optional for national federations. Kharja believes Infantino aims to "globalize football" and foster development worldwide, particularly for smaller federations, to reduce disparities with traditional football powers.

He also urged Infantino and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin to engage in dialogue to resolve disputes, stating that boycotts are not the solution and that discussion is essential for the benefit of global football.
