Moroccan footballer drowns attempting Spain crossing on day visa was issued

A 24-year-old Moroccan footballer drowned while attempting to reach Spain by sea, a tragedy that occurred on the very day she had been granted a Spanish visa. F. El Azizi, who played for the women's team of Tanja's "Moghreb Athletic," was among tens of thousands who rushed to the coast of Fnideq, believing the path to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta was open.

While the exact circumstances of her death are unclear, her uncle told the Moroccan portal "Alyaoum24" that El Azizi had applied for a Spanish visa. The permit to enter Europe was issued on the same day she joined the dangerous sea crossing attempt from Fnideq. Tragically, she never learned her visa request had been approved.

El Azizi's former teammates and coaches remembered her as a humble, hardworking, and beloved player. The Moroccan professional footballers' union extended condolences to her family. She was buried in her hometown of Tetuan.

This incident occurred during a significant migration wave in late July, which saw an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 people attempt to reach Ceuta. Spanish authorities reported that at least 67 individuals died during these border crossing attempts, with over 48,000 migrants either returning or being sent back to Morocco.
