Morocco Issues Guide for Quranic Schools

Morocco's Ministry of Islamic Affairs has introduced a new guide aimed at standardizing the teaching of Quranic memorization in traditional Quranic schools, known as 'kuttabs'. This initiative seeks to harmonize authentic Islamic methods with contemporary pedagogical approaches, fostering both quality memorization and effective performance.

The guide, issued by the Directorate of Ancient Education within the ministry, is presented as a "roadmap for memorizing the Holy Quran in Quranic schools." Its objective is to preserve and elevate Morocco's distinguished tradition in Quranic preservation. The document begins with an introduction on the merits and religious ruling of memorizing the Quran, followed by a definition of the kuttab, its types, and its functions.

Furthermore, the guide details the essential scientific, ethical, and methodological competencies expected of Quran instructors. It elaborates on the "authentic methods" of memorization, outlining their three stages: familiarization, learning, mastery, and consolidation, progressing through memorization and completion. The guide also introduces modern tools and techniques employed in memorization, alongside the fundamental pillars supporting these methods.

Entitled "The Reference Guide for Memorizing the Holy Quran in Quranic Schools," the document provides instructors with appropriate curricula and timeframes for memorization, recitation, supervision, teaching, correction, and group review, tailored to different learning groups. The guide emphasizes "diligence and effort" as key to improving memorization, stating that "the key to all of this is diligence, sincerity, truthfulness, and the desire to attain the promised goodness mentioned in our Prophet's saying: 'The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.'"
