Morocco Marks 72nd Anniversary of Kunaytra Uprising, a Key Moment in Independence Struggle

The Moroccan people, alongside veterans of the national movement, resistance, and the liberation army, are commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the popular uprising in the city of Kunaytra. The events of August 7, 8, and 9, 1954, marked a crucial turning point in the historical struggle for freedom, independence, and territorial unity.

The national movement's presence in the Kunaytra region dates back to protests against the "Berber Decree" in May 1930. Leaders in cities like Fez, Rabat, and Salé recognized Kunaytra's strategic importance to the French protectorate and worked early on to mobilize the city's population. Education played a key role in shaping youth and disseminating the principles of the national movement, fostering a generation equipped to confront the colonial power.

Kunaytra also played a significant role in the presentation of the Independence Manifesto on January 11, 1944. The regions of Gharb-Chrarda-Beni Hsen were at the forefront of organizing this historic stand, coordinating its preparation and timing in consultation with the late King Mohammed V.

The city's commitment to the cause of independence was evident even after the exile of Mohammed V on August 20, 1953. Kunaytra's inhabitants demonstrated unwavering resolve, making sacrifices in battles against the colonizer in the city and its surroundings. Despite facing numerous martyrs, wounded, exiles, and detainees, their determination never wavered.

The commemoration also underscores the strong bond between Kunaytra's residents and the Moroccan monarchy. This connection was a primary factor in fostering unity among various regions of Morocco, contributing to the successful national struggle. The anniversary coincides with the 27th celebration of King Mohammed VI's ascension to the throne, reinforcing the enduring legacy of the fight for a free and independent Morocco.
