Morocco ranks 136th in global environmental performance index

Morocco has been placed 136th out of 177 countries in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), a biennial report compiled by Yale and Columbia universities. The Kingdom scored 33.11 points out of 100, ranking 13th within the Middle East and North Africa region.

Globally, Estonia secured the top spot with 74.79 points, followed by Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. European countries largely dominated the leading positions, largely attributed to their advancements in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Outside Europe, Japan ranked 16th, Australia 25th, and the United States and Canada were within the top 30.

The EPI report assesses countries based on 47 sub-indicators across 12 policy areas. It notes that many nations in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa face severe environmental pressures, including air and water pollution, ecosystem stress from agriculture, deforestation, and the consequences of climate change. Despite a decade of international commitments under the Paris Agreement, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, with most countries failing to reduce emissions at the required pace.
