Morocco's Constitutional Union Seeks New Candidate After Key Defection

The Constitutional Union party, a significant political force in the Tangier-Assilah constituency, faces a challenging search for a new parliamentary candidate. The departure of Mohamed Zemmouri, who had consistently secured a seat for the party, to join the Popular Movement party has created a void.

Party sources indicate that Secretary-General Mohamed Jodar has tasked real estate developer Hamid Abrchan with finding a strong contender to compete for one of the five seats allocated to the Tangier-Assilah district in the upcoming September elections. Jodar is reportedly trying to persuade Abrchan to resign from the Council of Advisors and run himself, though this appears unlikely given the tight timeline.

There is nothing official yet, and I believe the Constitutional Union wants to nominate a candidate capable of competing.

Alternative candidates are also being considered within the party, including local councilor Abdelsalam El Aidouni. Jodar has postponed a visit to Tangier at Abrchan's request, a move seen by some as an attempt to gain more time to identify a suitable profile.

Abrchan has reportedly initiated preliminary discussions with Mohamed El Hamidi, a leader in the Authenticity and Modernity Party and head of the Tangier-Assilah provincial council, regarding the possibility of his son running under the Constitutional Union's banner. El Hamidi confirmed these initial contacts, stating that discussions are in their early stages and that nothing is official yet. He suggested that a potential alliance with Abrchan and El Aidouni could form a significant electoral base.
