Moscow welcomes IOC decision to lift suspension of Russian Olympic Committee

Russia's Sports Minister Mijaíl Degtiariov expressed approval of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to provisionally revoke the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). The suspension had been in place since October 2023. The IOC's move also includes a recommendation for international sports federations to lift existing restrictions on Russian athletes.

Degtiariov stated on his Telegram channel that the IOC's decision will significantly speed up the process of Russian athletes returning to international competitions. He noted that over 20 international sports federations currently permit young athletes to compete under the Russian flag and with their national anthem, while 10 federations allow all athletes without restrictions. The IOC's latest ruling is anticipated to enhance this trend.

The IOC Executive Commission based its decision on a legal affairs commission's report, which found that the ROC no longer includes any regional sports organizations from occupied Ukrainian territories. The IOC, headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, is moving towards normalizing the situation for Russian athletes, similar to actions taken regarding Belarusian athletes in May. However, decisions regarding the display of Russian national symbols like the flag and anthem at Olympic events remain pending. Furthermore, the IOC will not organize events in Russia nor invite Russian government officials to its functions.
