Most US troops to arrive in Lithuania this year, defense minister says

Lithuania anticipates the arrival of the majority of new U.S. troop capabilities within the current year, signaling a strengthening of its defense posture and alliance with the United States.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed that Lithuania has received positive indications regarding the deployment. While specific arrival dates remain unconfirmed, Kaunas emphasized the principal decision by the U.S. to view Lithuania as a reliable ally and address the security concerns of the region. He noted that logistical and technical details are currently being finalized.

This expected deployment follows a period where U.S. troops had begun withdrawing after completing their rotation in early June. The delay in the arrival of new forces had raised some concerns, but assurances from allies have been provided. Lithuanian military leadership, including Chief of Defence Raimundas Vaikšnoras, has indicated that new U.S. troops will replace those who have departed, maintaining a continuous presence.

The U.S. began regularly rotating forces in the Baltic states and Poland following Russia's invasion of Ukraine four years ago. Heavy U.S. battalions have been rotating in Lithuania since 2019, underscoring the strategic importance of the region in the face of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
