Mother-in-law caught in affair with son-in-law; court grants divorce

A shocking case of infidelity has emerged in Taoyuan, Taiwan, where a mother-in-law was caught in an affair with her own son-in-law by her daughter.

The illicit relationship reportedly came to light in 2023 when the daughter discovered the pair together. Following the exposure, the mother-in-law allegedly fled her home in December 2023, severing all ties with her family and disappearing.

The husband, left betrayed by both his wife and mother-in-law, searched extensively for his wife without success. Facing her unexplained absence and refusal to fulfill marital cohabitation duties, he ultimately filed for divorce.

The Taoyuan District Court, after reviewing evidence including police reports, household registration, and witness testimonies, confirmed the couple had been separated for over two years. The court found the wife's departure to be an "malicious abandonment" of her husband, fulfilling the legal grounds for divorce under Taiwan's Civil Code. The divorce was granted.
