Motta declares support for Lula after his party rejects coalition with Flávio Bolsonaro

Hugo Motta, the president of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies and a member of the Republicanos party, announced his and his state chapter's support for President Lula's re-election campaign. This declaration comes after the Republicanos party nationally opted for neutrality, freeing its state branches to endorse candidates they deem most suitable for the country's future.

Motta, who is also seeking re-election, stated that a potential fourth term for Lula aligns with the party leadership's view of what is best for Brazil. He explained that he had been awaiting the party's official decision before making his position public. "The tendency for us, here in Paraíba, and this had already been said before, is that we will move forward with President Lula," Motta said.

He made these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony for Giovanna Mayer as a judge at the Regional Electoral Court of Paraíba. Motta highlighted that his support for Lula is based on the belief that the current president's agenda converges with his own vision for the nation. "We will declare this support for the president, because he is the president who converges with what we think is best for the country," he added.

In Paraíba, Motta is also working to support his father, Nabor Wanderley, the mayor of Patos, in his bid for a Senate seat, hoping for Lula's backing. Lula secured a significant 66.6% of the votes in Paraíba during the 2022 elections. The Republicanos party's national decision, confirmed at a convention, saw 17 state chapters choose neutrality, nine align with the PL party, and only one explicitly support Lula.
