Mount Anak Krakatau ash disrupts flights across Jakarta, Makassar and Lombok

Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted flights across Indonesia on Sunday, affecting routes linking Jakarta, Makassar and Lombok. The eruption led to cancellations, delays and temporary airport closures.

At Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, 21 flights were affected. Twelve were canceled and nine delayed. One passenger, Nurlia, said she had waited three hours for confirmation of her flight from Makassar to Jakarta.

Eight flights on the Lombok-Jakarta and Jakarta-Lombok routes were canceled at Lombok International Airport. Aidhil Philip Julian, general manager of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia at Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport, said the cancellations resulted from volcanic ash. Four canceled flights were scheduled to depart Lombok for Jakarta, and four were arrivals from Jakarta.

The affected services included flights operated by TransNusa, Super Air Jet, Garuda Indonesia and Citilink Indonesia. Aidhil urged passengers to monitor updates from their airlines, although he said airport operations remained normal.

The disruption followed the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang after ash was detected in the airport area. The suspension was extended to 1:30 p.m. local time under NOTAM A3341/26. Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung also temporarily closed at different times because of ash in the airspace.
