Mount Anak Krakatau eruption brings light ashfall to Banten coast

Light volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau began falling over coastal areas of Banten on Saturday night, especially around the Pasauran Volcanic Observation Post in Anyer, Serang Regency.

Deni Mardiono, head of the observation post, said wind gusts were carrying volcanic material eastward toward the Banten coast. He said the post had received only a very thin layer of ash, while CCTV footage showed scattered ash around the area.

Currently, the Pasauran post is affected by a very thin layer of volcanic ash. CCTV footage shows a lot of scattered ash. The ash is influenced by the wind direction, so it's likely the wind is coming from the east, carrying it to the Banten coast.

The eruption remained intense in the waters of the Sunda Strait. Images showed a fiery red glow and lightning, while continuous rumbling and loud booms shook doors, windows and cupboards inside the observation post.

Despite the thin ashfall and powerful sounds, Mardiono said the volcano’s activity had not increased. Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Alert Level III. Residents and tourists are prohibited from approaching within three kilometers of the crater.
