Mountaineer Nirmal Purja killed in Pakistan avalanche, his company says

Tragedy has struck on Broad Peak in Pakistan, with renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja confirmed among those killed in an avalanche. His company, Elite Expeditions, shared the devastating news on social media, stating it was with "profound sadness and immense heartbreak" that they confirmed Purja's death.

The avalanche on Thursday claimed the lives of all ten members of the expedition. Elite Expeditions confirmed that the other nine climbers accompanying Purja did not survive the incident.

Purja, a former British Army soldier originally from Nepal, was celebrated for his incredible mountaineering feats. In 2019, he achieved a world record by scaling all 14 of the world's highest peaks in just over six months. This latest expedition tragically ended his life.

Pakistani officials had previously reported the recovery of three bodies from the expedition: American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Al Harthy from Oman, and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. The full extent of the loss is still being processed as recovery efforts continue.
