Mourinho revives his famous “Why?”

José Mourinho brought back one of his most memorable lines on Monday, asking “why?” after Kylian Mbappé’s penalty against Betis was not retaken.

The Portuguese coach used the phrase on April 27, 2011, when he criticized the refereeing after Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. This time, he directed the question at the decision involving Mbappé’s missed spot kick in Friday’s match against Betis.

Mourinho was not asked directly about the incident at his news conference, but chose to address it anyway. He first said Real Madrid had lost because it failed to turn its attacking production into goals.

“But the penalty, why was it not retaken?” Mourinho said. “Was it not retaken because VAR does not know the rules, or because VAR did not want to? This is a question that, as Real Madrid coach, I would like the responsible people to answer.”
