MPMX Begins Coral Reef Restoration Program in Labuan Bajo

PT Mitra Pinasthika Mustika Tbk has started transplanting coral in Pasir Putih village on Messah Island, in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara. The program targets 500 coral seedlings placed on 32 spider frames, a structure used to support transplantation.

Messah Island lies in the buffer zone of Komodo National Park. The site was selected following recommendations and coordination with the Komodo National Park Office, which identified the area as needing support for coral ecosystem recovery.

The initiative builds on activities that began in April 2026. Before the transplantation work started, MPMX held educational sessions with village officials, community leaders, fishers and residents. It also trained representatives of the Pasir Putih Tourism Awareness Group in coral nursery construction and management.

The training covered coral nursery methods, fragment selection, frame installation, coral care, growth monitoring and transplantation into rehabilitation areas. Natalia Lusnita, MPMX’s general manager for corporate communications and sustainability, said the program focused on restoring the marine ecosystem while strengthening local capacity.

That is why collaboration with the government, area authorities, local communities and various stakeholders is key so that the program’s benefits can grow and be felt over the long term.

She added that healthy reefs support biodiversity, fisheries and marine tourism, making cooperation among the government, conservation authorities, local communities and other stakeholders important for long-term benefits.

The program will run for four years and combine reef rehabilitation, community capacity-building and conservation. MPMX said healthier coral reefs could support fisheries and the development of ecotourism. The project follows the company’s planting of 100,000 mangroves in Golo Sepang village between 2022 and 2025, alongside mud crab cultivation and support for local small businesses. Pasir Putih village head Mustaming welcomed the continuation of the coral program and said coastal conservation should involve the community.
