MPs must put Ghanaians' interests above personal ambitions, says retired Justice Atuguba

Retired Supreme Court Justice William A. Atuguba has called on Ghana's current Members of Parliament to place the nation's interests above their personal ambitions and party affiliations. Speaking at a memorial lecture for the late Justice Daniel Francis Annan, Atuguba expressed concern that many MPs in the Ninth Parliament are prioritizing self-interest and party loyalty over the electorate.

"I see this Parliament as standing for something else than the interest of Ghana," Justice Atuguba stated. He described the situation as unacceptable, contrasting it with the integrity and selflessness of the late Justice Annan, a former Speaker of Parliament. Atuguba criticized politicians who engage in populist campaign tactics, such as drinking palm wine or pounding fufu, only to neglect their constituents once in office. He reminded them that "Power belonged to the people, not politicians."

I see this Parliament as standing for something else than the interest of Ghana. That’s how I see it. Some of them are good. But others are a mess. A loyalty to the party and to the government for the time being is present.

Despite his criticisms, Atuguba commended some MPs, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, for demonstrating principled leadership and integrity, which he said reflected Justice Annan's values. The retired justice also noted a lack of integrity and respect for the rule of law within parts of the judiciary, urging judges to follow Justice Annan's example of independence and fairness. The event, themed "Democracy, Development, and National Unity: Celebrating the Enduring Legacy of Rt. Hon. Justice D.F. Annan," was attended by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and other dignitaries.
