Multiple adults, children dead in Montana shooting and house fire: police

A gunman killed multiple adults and children in Billings, Montana, before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Sunday. The suspect also set the home on fire, which became fully engulfed in flames.

During the phone call, 911 Operators could hear gunfire in the background.

Law enforcement arrived to the sound of gunfire and observed smoke coming from the house. Fire suppression efforts were prioritized as the fire blocked any attempt to rescue or recover victims. The Billings Fire Department worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent homes.

At 6:15 p.m., smoke is seen coming from the house, which becomes fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities stated the incident began as a family disturbance and was not a random act. The Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and asked the public to avoid the crime scene to allow for evidence collection over multiple days. The number of victims, their ages, and biographical information will be released after notifications are made.
