Municipal assistant shot dead in Emiliano Zapata; 70 women murdered this year

A municipal assistant in Emiliano Zapata, Morelos, was fatally shot on Tuesday morning, adding to the grim tally of violence against women in the state. Yolanda "N", who served as the municipal assistant for the town of Tepetzingo, was killed just in front of the municipal office on 20 de Noviembre street. The attack occurred at approximately 6:26 a.m., prompting an emergency response.

Paramedics and local police arrived at the scene but confirmed that Yolanda "N" had already succumbed to her injuries. This tragic event brings the total number of women murdered in Morelos this year to 70. However, officials note that not all of these homicides are being classified as femicides, a specific legal category for crimes motivated by gender.

Forensic experts from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) secured the crime scene to collect evidence, including shell casings, and initiated their investigation. The state's Criminal Investigation Agency has deployed agents to determine the motive behind the killing and identify those responsible. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made.

The municipality of Emiliano Zapata is governed by Santos Tavarez García, who is reportedly linked to organized crime, specifically the Familia Michoacana, according to federal investigations into a network of mayors.
