Municipal president of San Miguel Amatitlán, Oaxaca, shot dead; had suffered an assault weeks prior

Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez, the municipal president of San Miguel Amatitlán in Oaxaca, was assassinated on Saturday morning by armed assailants who entered his home. The 53-year-old official was shot and killed around 8:00 AM, according to initial reports.

Bravo Martínez, who represented the National Action Party (PAN), had a political career that included running as a candidate for the PAN-PRI-PRD coalition in the 2024 elections. His death has prompted an immediate investigation by the Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office (FGEO), which has pledged to use rigorous technical and scientific methods, along with inter-institutional intelligence, to uncover the details of the attack and bring those responsible to justice.

This is not the first time Bravo Martínez has been targeted. On May 22, he was the victim of a highway assault near Santiago Petlalcingo, Puebla, while traveling with three members of his staff. Unknown assailants ambushed them, forcing them to exit their vehicle and robbing them of their belongings.
