Museveni Celebrates Kiira Motors' Electric Bus Milestone After 13,700km Pearl to Cape Expedition

President Yoweri Museveni hosted a luncheon at State House, Entebbe, to honor the successful Presidential Pearl to Cape Expedition 2025. The event celebrated the historic journey of the Kayoola EVS electric coach, which traveled from Uganda to South Africa and back, covering over 13,700 kilometers across various African nations.

The expedition served as a powerful demonstration of Uganda's burgeoning capabilities in science, technology, innovation, electric mobility, and local manufacturing. It also underscored the nation's aspirations to become a regional hub for automotive production and advanced manufacturing. During the event, President Museveni lauded Kiira Motors Corporation and its CEO, Paul Isaac Musasizi, along with the engineers and scientists involved, for proving Uganda's capacity to design, manufacture, and operate electric vehicles.

Museveni characterized the achievement as a vital part of Africa's industrial transformation, reflecting Uganda's vision for a self-sustaining economy built on local production, value addition, and modern technology. He emphasized that Kiira Motors signifies a resurgence of Africa's industrial potential through innovation, enabling Ugandans to create products for both domestic and regional markets. The President reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting local industries that generate jobs and strengthen the manufacturing sector.

To further Uganda's electric mobility agenda, President Museveni issued directives to relevant ministries and agencies. These include fast-tracking measures to expand Kiira Motors' production capacity, increasing government purchases of locally manufactured buses, enhancing electric public transport systems, and supporting local battery manufacturing through strategic partnerships. He also expressed openness to private investor collaborations for battery production and the expansion of the Kiira Vehicle Plant, stressing the need for swift action to maintain competitiveness in science, technology, and manufacturing.
