Museveni Mourns Gen Moses Ali, Citing Long Service and Farming Example

President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late General Moses Ali, former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Adjumani County West. Museveni described Ali as a dedicated leader who served Uganda for many years, both as a soldier and a political figure. He also noted Ali's success as a modern farmer in the West Nile region, setting a positive example.

In a message shared on his official X account, Museveni reflected on Gen. Ali's decades of public service and his contributions to agriculture. "Gen Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader," Museveni wrote. "In the West Nile region, he provided the good example of being a big modern farmer. We shall miss greatly his contribution. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace."

General Ali, one of Uganda's longest-serving political and military figures, passed away at the age of 87. His career encompassed periods from colonial rule, the Idi Amin government, armed rebellion, and nearly four decades within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) administration. He died at Nakasero Hospital after being admitted with unspecified ailments, and his family reported he had been in a coma before his death.

Ali had recently retired from active government service after President Museveni omitted him from the Cabinet appointed in May 2026, citing medical grounds. His son, Siraji Musa Ali, was subsequently appointed Minister of State for Works and Transport. Born in 1939 in the Adjumani District, Ali had a distinguished career that included military training in Israel and the United Kingdom, rising to the rank of Brigadier by 1974. He held several senior ministerial portfolios under the Idi Amin government and later led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) before the NRM took power in 1986.
