Music producer survives fatal helicopter crash in Rio by changing plans last minute

Brazilian music producer Victor WAO survived a deadly helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro on June 14, 2026, by making a last-minute decision to travel by car. WAO was scheduled to be on one of the two helicopters that collided in the air, resulting in the deaths of all six people on board.

WAO explained on social media that he had a fear of flying. His friend, Lucas Frota, who was among the deceased, had arranged ground transportation for him. This change of plans meant WAO was not on the aircraft that crashed in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in Rio's west zone. The other victims included Argentinian YouTuber Gaspi, American singer Oliver Tree, and Argentinian filmmaker Lucas Vignale.

Visibly distraught, WAO expressed his grief and disbelief on social media, stating, "I was supposed to go with you in that helicopter, and I didn't go at the last second. Now I owe you my life, brother." He shared moments of him learning about the confirmed deaths, breaking down in tears. WAO also conveyed a sense of helplessness, questioning if he could have done anything to prevent the tragedy, but vowed to honor the memory and work of his late friend.

The Brazilian Air Force's Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents is investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest potential mechanical failures or human error, with a 30-day timeframe for a detailed evaluation. The investigation revealed that one helicopter was en route to Angra dos Reis, while the other was heading to the mountainous region when they collided. The debris scattered over 100 meters, damaging a dealership and igniting 20 vehicles.
