Music star’s tour: Why 2026 Community Shield is holding in Cardiff, not Wembley

Cardiff's Principality Stadium will host the 2026 FA Community Shield on Sunday, August 16, between Arsenal and Manchester City. This marks a significant return for the traditional season-opener to the Welsh capital, the first time in two decades it has been staged there.

The shift from Wembley Stadium, the fixture's customary venue, is attributed to a scheduling conflict. Music superstar The Weeknd's "After Hours Til Dawn" tour is set to take place at Wembley on the same day, necessitating the move.

This relocation makes the 2026 edition only the third Community Shield played away from Wembley since the stadium's redevelopment and reopening in 2007. The Principality Stadium previously hosted the match for six consecutive years, from 2001 to 2006, during Wembley's construction.

Other notable instances of the Community Shield being moved include the 2012 match between Manchester City and Chelsea, which was held at Villa Park due to the London Olympics. More recently, in 2022, Manchester City faced Liverpool at Leicester City's King Power Stadium because Wembley was hosting the Women's European Championship final. The 2026 return to Cardiff underscores the fixture's history of adapting to venue availability.
