Musical theater 'PGL' is a meaningful personal achievement this year - Mimi Fly

Singer Mimi Fly is embracing a new artistic challenge as she prepares to perform in the highly anticipated musical theater production 'Puteri Gunung Ledang' (PGL). The artist, whose full name is Shamimi Amalina Norhisham, sees this role as a significant personal milestone, particularly as she approaches her 40th birthday. She describes herself as someone who constantly seeks new knowledge and experiences, a trait that has opened doors to diverse artistic endeavors.

As an entertainer, I really enjoy learning various branches of art. Singing, dancing, producing music videos, teaching dance, yoga, and now musical theater. Musical theater has always been one of my dreams, but it never materialized before. I get bored easily. I like learning new things. When I've done something for a long time, I try something else.

Having previously participated in musical theater, Mimi Fly notes that PGL represents a production of a much larger scale than anything she has undertaken before, under the direction of Puan Seri Tiara Jacquelina. "As an entertainer, I really enjoy learning various branches of art. Singing, dancing, producing music videos, teaching dance, yoga, and now musical theater," she shared. "Musical theater has always been one of my dreams, but it never materialized before. I get bored easily. I like learning new things. When I've done something for a long time, I try something else."

She expressed immense pride in finally securing this opportunity. "This year I turn 40. When I finally get this chance, I feel very proud of myself. This is a very meaningful personal achievement," Mimi Fly told Utusan Malaysia. Despite her excitement, she admits to feeling nervous about fully immersing herself in the character of Bayan and potentially overshadowing her own established public identity as 'Mimi Fly'.

"This is my first time doing large-scale musical theater. I don't know how the process works. I'm very nervous. But I can't indulge that feeling. I said I wanted to do it, so I have to be committed," she explained. "I have acted before, but it's been a long time since I was active. People know me as 'Mimi Fly,' not as an actress. I haven't acted in many dramas, so everything feels new. The biggest challenge is ensuring the audience doesn't see 'Mimi Fly' on stage. I want them to see the character, not me. That's why I have to study and understand the character as best as possible."

Even amidst intensive rehearsals, workshops, and foundational theater training for PGL, Mimi Fly is managing a demanding schedule. She continues to accept important offers related to her singing career and is working to complete pending tasks before the musical's premiere. "Right now, I am busy with theater rehearsals. So anything I want to release, whether it's a new song or a music video, it all needs to be finished now before rehearsals begin," she stated. "I'm also still taking other job offers. But only important projects. Sometimes I don't know which is important, but when I discuss it with the team, if they say it's important, I follow. There are some projects that I feel I really can't refuse. But at the same time, I deliberately give myself more time..."
