Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing makes first Thailand visit as leader

Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Bangkok on Thursday, embarking on his first visit to Thailand since assuming the presidency. The trip is seen as an effort to reintegrate the internationally isolated nation into the diplomatic fold.

Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2021 military coup, was inaugurated as president after a disputed election in April. International bodies and Western nations have questioned the election's fairness and credibility, noting the absence of genuine opposition.

Neighboring Thailand has taken a leading role in normalizing relations with Myanmar since the election, both bilaterally and through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN had previously excluded Myanmar's military junta from key summits following the 2021 coup, though the country's foreign minister recently attended an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting.

Since stepping down as military chief and taking the presidential role, Min Aung Hlaing has pursued a diplomatic offensive, visiting India, China, and Laos. This visit to Thailand is another step in his administration's efforts to mend international ties.
