Mykonos: 57-year-old arrested for demanding 80,000 euros to drop complaints

A 57-year-old Greek man has been arrested on the island of Mykonos on charges of extortion, accused of demanding 80,000 euros from the director of a prominent local business. The arrest was the result of a coordinated operation by the Mykonos Police Sub-directorate, according to cyclades24.gr.

Authorities report that the suspect allegedly demanded 50,000 euros to cease making false complaints about noise pollution targeting the business. Sources indicate the total demand reached 80,000 euros, with an initial 50,000 euros and a further 30,000 euros to be paid in October. Information suggests a similar tactic was employed the previous year, resulting in a payment of approximately 60,000 euros.

This time, however, the businessman chose to report the incident to the police. An operation was organized, during which the sum of 50,000 euros was marked and handed over at a predetermined location under police observation. As soon as the 57-year-old suspect received the marked banknotes, officers intervened and apprehended him.

A case file has been compiled against him for extortion, classified as a felony. The suspect reportedly drew attention upon his arrival at the Ermoupoli Municipal Building, where the judicial services are housed. Upon seeing journalists, he allegedly asked an officer, "Are photographs not prohibited?" Reports suggest the accused is a well-connected individual with past ties to the maritime industry through his former wife.
