NAFDAC intercepts two tankers meant for edible vegetable oil conveying diesel in Lagos

Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intercepted two tankers in Lagos that were designated for transporting edible vegetable oil but were instead found to be carrying Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel.

Martins Iluyomade, the agency's Director of Investigation and Enforcement, described the incident as a significant violation of food safety standards and a potential risk to public health. The discovery was made during a recent enforcement operation. Investigations revealed that the tankers, which are supposed to be dedicated solely to edible oil, had been loaded with diesel.

Vegetable oil has nothing to do with petrol or petroleum products, and that is why we are very particular about it.

The manager of the operation reportedly claimed ignorance of the specific color-coding requirements for edible oil tankers, stating the vehicles had previously only transported diesel. Iluyomade emphasized that tankers designated for edible vegetable oil must be exclusively used for that purpose, aligning with international food safety best practices. He stressed that vegetable oil has no relation to petroleum products.

NAFDAC has taken custody of the two tankers and their drivers as investigations continue to ascertain the full scope of the violation and determine appropriate regulatory actions. The agency assured the public of intensified enforcement and vigilance to prevent recurrence. Iluyomade also urged industry operators to comply with safety regulations and appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities.
