Nagano Prefecture, Japan Experiences Two Earthquakes Above Magnitude 5.0; Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route Suspends Operations

Liberty Times reports on the seismic activity in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, where two significant earthquakes, measuring above magnitude 5.0, struck the region on April 18th. The tremors, originating at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, caused immediate concern and led to temporary suspensions of transportation services.

The impact was felt across various transport networks. The JR Shinonoi Line experienced service suspensions for trains running between Matsumoto and Nagano stations. Additionally, several other railway lines faced delays. The Hokuriku Shinkansen also saw temporary closures on its route between Ichikawada and Karuizawa stations, though services were restored by mid-afternoon. The scenic Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a popular tourist attraction connecting Nagano and Toyama prefectures, had its cable cars and electric buses halted between Lake Kurobe and Murodo as a precautionary measure.

Fortunately, the earthquakes did not result in any reported injuries. In a nursing home in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, elevators automatically stopped upon detecting the tremors, but all 42 elderly residents were reported safe. Similarly, an elevator at a local hotel ceased operation, with staff relieved that no guests were present at the time. While the earthquakes caused logistical disruptions, the primary concern for safety was met, with no casualties reported.
