Najib Razak avoids surgery after angiogram reveals manageable heart condition

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will not need surgery after undergoing a coronary angiogram on July 25, his medical team confirmed. Doctors identified coronary blockages that necessitated further evaluation through the angiogram procedure.

Following a series of medical assessments conducted over the past few weeks, doctors identified coronary blockages that warranted further evaluation through a coronary angiogram.

Najib's defense team, Messrs Shafee & Co Advocates & Solicitors, stated that previous medical assessments indicated a 95% likelihood of requiring further intervention, such as balloon angioplasty or stent insertion. However, the comprehensive assessment following the angiogram determined that these procedures were not necessary.

Based on these findings, the team advised that there was an estimated 95 per cent likelihood that Najib would require further intervention in the form of balloon angioplasty, stent insertion, or both.

The medical team advised that the identified blockages can be effectively managed through medication, ongoing medical monitoring, and follow-up treatment. The decision to proceed with the angiogram was based on medical necessity and the clinical findings at the time, with concerns about potential interventions being well-founded given the high probability.

However, upon completion of today’s coronary angiogram and comprehensive assessment, the treating specialists determined that neither balloon angioplasty nor stent insertion was required.

Fortunately, the angiogram revealed that the blockages are manageable without invasive procedures. The statement also conveyed the appreciation of Najib's family to the medical team. Najib Razak is reportedly in good condition and will continue his recovery under close medical supervision. He is currently serving a six-year prison sentence following his conviction in the SRC International case.
