NANS plans protest over ex-FUOYE SUG president’s remand

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is mobilizing for peaceful protests in Ekiti State following the remand of James Adio, the immediate past Students’ Union Government President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde described the situation as a "miscarriage of justice."

I have just been briefed that the Magistrate Court in Ekiti State has remanded the immediate past FUOYE SUG President, Comrade Adio, in prison over a matter that he personally instituted before the court.

According to NANS, Adio was remanded by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State over a matter he personally brought before the court as the complainant. The student body asserts that Adio had no criminal charges against him and alleges that the case was improperly turned against him by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding Magistrate.

From the facts available to us, Comrade Adio was the complainant and had no criminal case against him. It is therefore deeply disturbing that the matter was allegedly turned against him through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding Magistrate.

NANS condemned the development, labeling it as "judicial rascality, a gross abuse of due process, and a violation of Comrade Adio’s fundamental rights." In response, the association's leadership has directed relevant officials to commence mobilization for peaceful demonstrations. These protests are planned to take place at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Peaceful actions will be taken to demand justice, including lawful protests at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Comrade Adio is released and justice is served.

The student body stated its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and demanding justice, the rule of law, and the release of Adio. NANS Head of Administration, Owolewa Taiwo, further alleged in an open letter to state officials that Adio initiated the court case after private, consensual moments with another adult were allegedly recorded and circulated on social media without his consent.

The National Association of Nigerian Students will not stand by while the rights of Nigerian students are trampled upon. We remain committed to defending justice, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of every Nigerian student.
