Nantou Election Crackdown Launched to Block Foreign Interference

Taiwan's Nantou District Prosecutor's Office has initiated pre-election strategy meetings as the year-end local elections approach. The primary objective is to precisely deploy measures, referred to metaphorically as 'mines,' to detect and disrupt foreign interference in the electoral process.

During a recent meeting, Taichung High Prosecutors Office Chief Prosecutor Lin Chin-tsun instructed relevant units to continuously monitor the effectiveness of these 'mines.' He urged them to enhance their ability to detonate these 'mines,' which includes educating individuals on how to gather evidence. The focus is also on identifying the financial backers and key operatives behind high-risk candidates suspected of vote-buying.

Furthermore, the authorities plan to strengthen public awareness campaigns regarding the Counter-Infiltration Act. This effort aims to block disinformation and prevent external forces from influencing the elections. The meeting involved detailed reports on the current election landscape, intelligence gathering, strategies for combating bribery, and the execution of these plans.

The Nantou District Prosecutor's Office, along with local police, the Investigation Bureau's Nantou County Investigation Station, and the Nantou County Government's Integrity Office, participated in the discussions. The goal is to consolidate efforts and enhance election monitoring to prevent bribery, violence, foreign interference, election gambling syndicates, and the spread of fake news, including deepfake videos.
