Naomi Watts to receive honorary award at San Sebastián Film Festival

Naomi Watts will receive the Donostia Award for her career at the San Sebastián Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 18 to 26. Organizers will present the honor to the British actress and producer on Sept. 19 at the Kursaal congress center before a screening of The Housewife, in which she stars.

The festival described Watts as “one of the most talented and recognized actresses of her generation.” Now 57, she has received two Oscar nominations and became widely known after her performance in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive in 2001.

Her career has moved between auteur films and major productions. Her credits include 21 Grams, Birdman, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Funny Games and The Impossible. Her work with Spanish director J. A. Bayona brought her a Golden Globe and her second Oscar nomination in 2013, after her nomination for 21 Grams in 2004.

Watts was also nominated for an Emmy for her work in the second season of Ryan Murphy’s miniseries Feud, on which she also served as a producer. In recent years, she has become an active campaigner for awareness of menopause and women’s health.

The 74th festival will also give a Donostia Award to German director, screenwriter, producer and actor Werner Herzog. Previous recipients include Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Agnès Varda, Catherine Deneuve and Pedro Almodóvar.
