NASA Artemis crews train in Iceland, a long-standing lunar analogue site

Astronauts preparing for NASA's upcoming lunar missions are currently undergoing geological training in Iceland. The U.S. Embassy in Iceland shared photos on Facebook of the Artemis II crew training in Vatnajökull National Park during the summer of 2024.

Iceland's unique volcanic landscapes have long served as a valuable analogue for lunar terrain, allowing astronauts to practice geological fieldwork. This training helps them identify and collect samples similar to what they might encounter on the Moon. The equipment used during these exercises is designed for lunar exploration.

While the Artemis II crew conducted training in Iceland in 2024, the current group of astronauts training there are likely preparing for the Artemis III mission. This mission is significant as it is planned to include the first European astronaut on the Moon, Luca Parmitano, an Italian national.

Other members of the Artemis III crew include Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, and Randy Bresnik, with Bob Heintz serving as a backup. The mission is tentatively scheduled to launch in 2027. The embassy noted that Iceland has been a stand-in for the Moon for NASA astronaut training since the Apollo era, continuing a long-standing tradition.
