Nashville Airport may be renamed in honor of Dolly Parton

Nashville International Airport could soon bear the name of Dolly Parton, a beloved symbol of Tennessee, according to an announcement made Friday by the state's governor and airport representatives.

The airport and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee have expressed their intention to bestow Parton's name upon the airport as a "lasting tribute to her indelible legacy and the generations of people she has inspired in Tennessee and around the world," NBC News reported. Governor Lee reportedly discussed the proposal with Parton's team earlier this week, and her representatives conveyed their "appreciation."

"Dolly's extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state," Lee stated. "From her home in the rural mountains of East Tennessee to stages across the globe, Dolly has carried the spirit of Tennessee with her. In a place where Tennessee meets the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport bear the name of our state's favorite daughter and welcome travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly's music, generosity, faith, and kindness."

The proposal to rename the airport will be considered during the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority's meeting scheduled for September 17. A petition advocating for the renaming in Parton's honor, initiated more than a year prior to her passing, had amassed over 160,000 signatures by Friday evening. The initiative has also garnered support from a member of the Nashville City Council and a Tennessee state representative.
