National Children's Day: Reflecting on Parental Obligations

As Indonesia observes National Children's Day on July 23, the focus shifts to the profound obligations parents have towards their children. Imam Nur Suharto, Head of Public Relations and Preaching at Pesantren Husnul Khotimah in Kuningan, West Java, uses this occasion to remind parents of their duties, particularly in education and upbringing. He emphasizes that children are a gift from God, destined to be successors and strengtheners of family bonds.

Islam, as a comprehensive religion, offers detailed guidance on welcoming and nurturing children from birth. This meticulous attention underscores the importance of protecting, caring for, and educating children from the very beginning. Central to this is the right of a child to receive a good name, which serves as both a prayer and a hope. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, "Among the rights of a child upon his father is that he gives him a good name and educates him in good manners."

The tradition of naming a child can occur on their birth, third, or seventh day. A good name is characterized by being pleasant to hear, easy to pronounce, carrying noble meanings, and reflecting true and honest qualities, while avoiding anything forbidden or disliked by religion. Islamic tradition highly recommends names that signify servitude to God, such as Abdullah or Abdurrahman, as these are considered the most beloved names in the sight of Allah. Additionally, names of prophets, messengers, and righteous individuals are also encouraged.
