National Tsing Hua University President Criticized for Seeking Overseas Role After Reappointment

National Tsing Hua University President Kao Yu-jen is under fire for pursuing overseas presidential positions shortly after securing a renewed term at the Taiwanese institution. Kao, whose reappointment was approved by a majority of professors and associate professors on March 19 last year, began his new term on May 1, 2024, and is set to serve until April 30, 2030.

However, reports emerged that just three days after his reappointment, Kao applied for a presidential selection at a foreign institution. This has led to accusations from external critics and some professors that Kao is "looking for another job while employed" and is considering his personal future over his responsibilities as president, deeming him unfit for the role.

In response, the university issued a statement asserting that Kao's participation in the overseas selection was a personal decision. The statement emphasized that Kao has consistently dedicated himself to advancing university affairs, with all projects and major initiatives progressing without interruption. During his tenure, the university has seen the establishment of the Outstanding Talent Development Fund and the Tsing Hua Science Park, with fundraising reaching a record high this year and the QS World University Rankings improving to 142nd globally.

University officials further clarified that current regulations under the University Act do not prohibit incumbent presidents from participating in selections for other schools. Kao's decision to apply was reportedly driven by an invitation from the foreign institution and his personal career planning. The selection process abroad is described as akin to a commercial bidding process, involving negotiations on various conditions. Kao's application for the overseas presidency was unsuccessful.

Addressing concerns about his frequent absences, school sources stated that Kao travels abroad approximately five to six times annually, primarily for official duties such as leading innovation and entrepreneurship tours or talent recruitment. Personal travel is minimal, with his total time abroad averaging around 20 days per year, which is not considered excessive compared to other university presidents. He reportedly presides over most school and administrative meetings in person.
