NATO confirms French jets downed drone in Latvia

NATO confirmed on Monday that two French Rafale fighter jets, operating as part of the Alliance's Baltic Air Policing mission, intercepted and neutralized an unidentified drone that had entered Latvian airspace. The jets were scrambled from the Siauliai airbase in Lithuania after detecting the drone's entry.

"This demonstrates once again NATO's determination and capability to deter and defend," stated allied sources, emphasizing the effectiveness of the Alliance's air surveillance and response capabilities along its eastern flank. The "Eastern Sentinel" initiative, recently bolstered by NATO, aims to enhance vigilance following a series of airspace violations by Russian drones and aircraft in September.

Latvian Armed Forces had earlier reported that allied fighter jets downed a foreign drone over the eastern part of the country. The origin of the drone remains undisclosed, and neither Latvia nor Ukraine has commented on whether it was Ukrainian or Russian in origin. This incident is significant as it is the first recorded instance of an unmanned aerial vehicle being shot down since foreign drones began appearing in Latvian airspace.

The context of drone incursions has been a sensitive issue in Latvia. Previously, in May, the government of then-Prime Minister Evika Siliņa lost its parliamentary majority following a crisis triggered by the impact of two Ukrainian drones on energy infrastructure. This latest event underscores the ongoing challenges related to airspace security in the Baltic region.
