NATO fighter jet downs drone over Latvia amid Ukrainian attack on Russian port

An Italian Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet operating under NATO command shot down a drone over Latvian airspace early Friday morning. The incident occurred as Russia was reportedly diverting the drone, which is suspected to be of Ukrainian origin, amidst a significant Ukrainian drone assault on Ust-Luga, Russia's largest Baltic port.

According to a NATO spokesperson, the alert was triggered around 4:00 AM local time, prompting the emergency launch of two fighter jets. One of these aircraft successfully intercepted and downed the drone. Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets also scrambled in response.

Following the drone's destruction, a large-scale operation was launched on the ground to recover fragments of the aircraft and determine its origin. Latvian Armed Forces indicated that the drone may have altered its course due to Russian electronic warfare measures.

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs expressed gratitude to the country's armed forces and NATO allies for their professional response in destroying the drone. However, he refrained from speculating on the drone's specific origin.
