Nature holds up a mirror to the self

“Nature is not something independent from us or outside us. I experience it as a living medium of which I am also a part,” painter Amarilla Knyihár says about the relationship at the centre of her work.

Her exhibition, “Like Water, Your Mirror Runs and Stands,” opens at 6 p.m. on September 11 at the Szentendre Old Artists' Colony. Curated by Noémi Jusztusz, it will remain open until November 15.

Water, glass, light and shadow recur throughout Knyihár's paintings. Through these elements, she examines how the perception of the same landscape or view can change. She has explored transparency and reflection since her university years.

The new Szentendre exhibition continues that long-running interest while linking water and reflection to the human inner world. Knyihár, born in Békéscsaba in 1977, graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2002 and has taught for more than two decades. She has been an artist at the Szentendre Old Artists' Colony since 2017 and regularly exhibits in Hungary and abroad.
