NBA player D'Angelo Russell receives special Žalgiris gift during Lithuania visit

During a visit to Lithuania, NBA player D'Angelo Russell received a unique gesture from the renowned Lithuanian basketball club, Žalgiris Kaunas. Performer Justinas Jarutis, who created the club's anthem two years ago, presented Russell with a custom Žalgiris jersey.

Jarutis playfully told Russell, "When you get tired of the NBA and decide to come play and dominate in Europe, we have these jerseys ready for you so you know which team to come play for. Whenever you want, give them a call." Russell responded warmly, "Are you kidding me?! Greetings to Žalgiris. Good luck, guys."

The visit also brought to mind earlier reports that Russell was interested in potentially representing the Lithuanian men's national basketball team in the future. Two years prior, journalist Rokas Pakėnas reported that the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) had consulted with the President's office regarding the possibility of granting the player citizenship. This information was reportedly confirmed by presidential advisor Frederikas Jansonas.

Russell's connection to Lithuania stems from his family; he is engaged to Laura Ivaniukas, a Canadian-born woman of Lithuanian descent, and the couple has two children. However, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation later stated that no steps had been taken regarding the American player's naturalization. Russell, who began the season with the Dallas Mavericks, was traded to the Washington Wizards, did not play for them, and was subsequently traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
