NDC primary row: Group challenges disputed Lagos Assembly nomination

The organization Youths in Politics NG has called on the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to review the nomination process for the Lagos State House of Assembly's Eti-Osa Constituency I. This request follows a complaint lodged by aspirant John Akano regarding the circumstances surrounding the party's primary election.

According to the group's statement, Akano asserts that he fulfilled all requirements, including purchasing and completing nomination forms, obtaining clearance, and mobilizing supporters. He alleges that after the primary was either canceled or not concluded, efforts were made to present an individual who had not participated in the nomination process as the party's candidate.

Youths in Politics NG stated that after reviewing the information provided by Akano, they found sufficient grounds to warrant a transparent review before any decision is made that could impact qualified aspirants. The organization emphasized that its intervention is not an endorsement of Akano but a call for fairness, due process, and respect for internal democracy within the party. They stressed that if a primary was conducted and an aspirant legitimately won, the result should be verified and respected unless there's a lawful reason to overturn it.

The group urged the NDC to clearly communicate the legal and constitutional basis for any alternative method used to select a candidate if the primary was canceled. They also called for equal opportunities for all eligible aspirants in any fresh nomination process, adhering to the party's constitution and electoral laws. Youths in Politics NG warned that excluding young aspirants who have invested resources and mobilized support could discourage youth participation in politics. They recommended a transparent mechanism for dispute resolution and urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue grievances through lawful channels.
