NDC reconciliation: Utomi recalls 50-year rivalry with Galadima

Veteran politician Prof. Pat Utomi recalled a 50-year political rivalry with Buba Galadima, noting that their long-standing disagreements have not hindered a cordial personal relationship. Utomi expressed confidence that this dynamic bodes well for the Nigeria Democratic Congress's (NDC) efforts to reunite its aggrieved members before the 2027 general elections.

Buba Galadima and I have been fighting for 50 years, and we are still very good friends. So it means that we can equally make other people become friends.

Utomi's remarks followed the inauguration of the NDC National Reconciliation Committee in Abuja. The party established this committee to address grievances and potential litigation stemming from its recent nationwide congresses, convention, and primaries. The inauguration occurred just 48 hours after the party formally announced the committee's formation.

Serving as the committee's chairman, Utomi described the assignment as both a privilege and a significant responsibility. He stated that the panel would work to restore unity within the party while maintaining a focus on Nigeria's future. Utomi highlighted his long-standing friendship with Galadima as proof that reconciliation is possible, even among those with deep-seated political differences.

I feel humble and challenged by this assignment. I’m extremely privileged to be in the company I’m in.

Galadima, who co-chairs the committee, acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about its success. He described the task as difficult but emphasized that it marks the beginning of a journey toward victory. Galadima also criticized the Electoral Act, suggesting it is skewed against opposition parties and that President Tinubu is protecting his own party. He urged Nigerians to unite against the current administration for the 2027 elections.

I have no doubt this is going to be a straightforward assignment, even though it will be a very hard nut to crack.

Utomi also touched upon the NDC's policy development, noting the party's focus on Nigeria's youth, who constitute a significant portion of the population with a median age of 19.5 years. He stressed the need to envision a future where these young people can become global champions, requiring the party to move beyond "petty little things."

President Tinubu is protecting his party and making it difficult for other parties to produce strong candidates. I therefore urge all Nigerians to come together and throw him out in 2027.
