NDDC empowers staff with project monitoring skills

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its dedication to human capacity development by organizing a two-day workshop for staff in the Directorate of Project Monitoring and Supervision. The training aims to equip personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective service delivery and robust project oversight.

Every staff member in the Directorate must understand the step-by-step approach required for effective project monitoring within the Commission.

Engr. Gbenga Omowanle, Director of Project Monitoring and Supervision, described the workshop as both a refresher course and an induction program for existing and new staff. The training focuses on acquainting participants with the fundamental principles of Project Monitoring and Supervision (PMS) operations and the Commission's specific monitoring procedures. Omowanle stressed that every staff member must grasp the step-by-step approach required for effective project monitoring within the NDDC.

The workshop, titled “Building Competence for Effective Project Oversight and Development Outcomes,” was approved by NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku. It is designed to strengthen the integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality expected of staff while executing their duties. The training also seeks to bolster the quality of projects undertaken by the Commission.

Corruption exists everywhere in the world, but for us as a developing country, it remains a serious challenge. As staff of the PMS Directorate, document exactly what you observe in the field and submit your findings appropriately.

Lead Consultant Mr. Dagogo Tolofari highlighted the critical role PMS staff play in overseeing infrastructural projects. He noted the importance of equipping engineers with modern technology and technical expertise for effective quality monitoring. Tolofari added that the workshop would expose participants to field realities and common contractor strategies, equipping them with contemporary monitoring techniques. Resource person Dr. Dada Joseph addressed ethical issues, identifying corruption as a significant challenge and urging staff to document observations accurately and avoid compromising their integrity, emphasizing their primary loyalty to the NDDC.

Do not compromise. Contractors may attempt to influence you, but once you understand that your first loyalty is to the NDDC, you will always do the right thing.
